Inference loops... I SWEAR by inference loops. Sometimes, I only mark with three little loops in the margin. This english teacher hack encourages students to be very clear in their explanations and their inferences. Ask the question "if something is x, then it is y, if it is y, then it is z".... I snip this resource and paste it on to a lot of lessons!
