DIPS is a great way 'around' students who do not 'get' method and technique, or alternatively, those who heavily rely on word class but with little effect.

Analysing methods (AO2) does not strictly have to be finding techniques and word types (simile, verbs, etc), it can just be noticing that a writer chooses to do something (anything!) on purpose, with intention. If you find that a writer uses a character, theme or a word/phrase deliberately to create an impact, spread a message or symbolise/highlight something, then you’re analysing!
