Embedding Quotations: Essay Writing Skills

Embedding Quotations: Essay Writing Skills

Quotations and references are necessary in strong analysis - but how are students using quotations? Can they embed their references and weave them in and out of analysis, like a top level student?

On the AQA GCSE mark scheme, achieving the highest bands requires "judicious use of precise references to support interpretations" (AO1) and detailed analysis of "language, form and structure" (AO2). "Judicious" means selecting short, highly relevant quotes and embedding them to prove your point, rather than just copying out chunks of text.

Embedding quotations can be easy and is so achievable with this step-by-step resource. This resource plays with language-style quotations and there is one dedicated Macbeth example page too.
