When you consider ‘big ideas’ in English, you are thinking about society and what writers want to warn, attack, highlight or criticise about the world that we live in. Zoom out from the quotation and ask: what is the writer really saying about people, society, power, relationships or life? Don’t force a big idea onto every quotation: use it when it helps explain why the writer has made that choice. The best analysis connects a small detail to a bigger message and considers its consequences.
The writer presents [BIG IDEA] in order to [PURPOSE], encouraging the reader to [RESPONSE].
A four page resource for students to understand the process, see model examples and try their own by putting it into practise.
